Image Consulting Teaches Effects of Color

November 7, 2011 By Tiffany Nielsen 2 Comments

The Power of Color
Image Consulting Teaches Effects of Color

We just concluded our first California women’s image consulting “Train the Trainer” program. It was so fun!! The four day action-packed training for aspiring consultants focused on color, body frame and fashion personality for women. Our volunteer models praised the consultations, finding the results fascinating and eye-opening. Our new consultant team emerged empowered and anxious to build their businesses. We are so thankful for the positive outcome!

On the subject of color, we discussed how we connect or respond to it visually and mentally. Our lead trainer Marytina Lawrence shared some color connections that I found intriguing and sometimes very funny! I figured you would too, so here are a few examples to ponder.

Yellow Legal Pads: I don’t know about you, but when I write on a yellow legal pad, my penmanship earns me a failing grade! A reliable resource informed me that the color yellow affects our small motor skills, thus taking legible writing to pure messy note-taking for some people. So, why would a manufacturer produce yellow writing paper if it sends our penmanship right down the tubes?  Beats me.

US Armed Forces: Navy blue is the authoritative color in formal and semi-formal suits of all US Armed Forces. The color emphasizes a polished look, is found in our country’s flag and is non-combative. People in uniform always appear confident and ready to get to business…exactly what we need in this day and age.

Green Grass in the Meat Case:  Here is a humorous take on the color green. Remember when meat cases were lined in fake green grass?  I do.  Does that date me? Come to find out that the reason the savvy meat retailers decorated their meat cases with green was to draw out the “red” found in red meat. Bright red meat means “fresh.” I don’t see turf bedding in cases anymore.  I’m always intrigued with what merchandisers figure sells best. We learn something new every day, don’t we?

Imagine the power of color to lift our spirits, cloud our motor skills, awaken our senses and even scream danger. I’m really glad we have color because the world would be awfully dull without it.

Halloween Etiquette: Spooky Night Tips for Courteous Goblins

October 12, 2011 By Tiffany Nielsen 1 Comment

Halloween marks the beginning of America’s holiday season, and the weeks and months to come give all sorts of opportunities to improve social civility.  What better time than Halloween to reignite consideration for others? After all, good manners are most welcome from those on both sides of the doorsteps in our neighborhoods on Halloween.

Start out your Halloween festivities with a few tips that encourage community, hospitality and a fun night of sugary, spooky good times!

Get Creative with Costumes
Reach into your closets and get creative with building a costume, especially if you want to save money.  Consider mixing and matching pieces to come up with a close second to a store-bought costume.

An old military uniform is always debonair! A poodle skirt, sweater set and costume jewelry make a time-tested 50’s sock hop look.

Reaffirm that while some costumes are eye-catching and star-studded, they should always be age appropriate.

Sweet Treats
One bad apple made the pleasure of giving away homemade popcorn balls with gum drops a thing of the past (shucks!). Therefore, for the consideration of everyone, remember to stock up before October 31 on prepackaged candies sure to delight trick-or-treaters. However, if giving candy isn’t to your liking, what about a few coins? Kids need to save up for holiday shopping too.

If you sense the kids standing at your doorstep are too old to be trick-or-treating, forget reprimanding them and hope there is a good reason for their being at your doorstep.  They may be college students having fun and looking for their next meal!

Manners for Kids Manners start at home and are, hopefully, reinforced by peers in a community. Spend a few minutes discussing good manners with the kids you know by reminding them to practice the following:

  • Smile and say “trick or treat” when the front door  opens.
  • Say “thank you” for whatever treat is offered and mean it.
  • Stay on walk ways.  Avoid stepping on flowerbeds and lawns.

Good spirits win on Halloween as well as every other day of the year. Happy Trick-or-Treating!  And parents, if you are throwing your own Halloween party, have an excellent time! Etiquette note to remember: eating your kid’s candy is a big “no-no” without asking permission first.

Public Etiquette: Where Has Common Sense Wandered Off To?

September 28, 2011 By Tiffany Nielsen Leave a Comment

I don’t know what your mamma said about how you are supposed act in public, but I’m guessing, like my mom, she set good boundaries for how to behave appropriately.  My mom’s intentions were never to stifle me from having fun and they helped set me up for success by reminding me that I share the public space; it isn’t mine alone.

I’m fairly confident that most of us would like our guests and kids to keep their feet off the coffee table. So, here’s my sales pitch for reminding people to avoid this sticky, yet often committed faux pas:  Just imagine for a few seconds where your feet have been today.  What icky, gooey mess did you drag onto your shoes while moving from one place to the next?  Now that you have a visual of the potential germs attached to the bottom of your shoes, do we really have any business depositing them on a coffee table or other furniture?

Sprawled across a coffee table at the American Airlines Admirals Club, the man in the photo looks right at home. When I received this picture from my cousin saying “You need to blog this. Feet on the table at the Admirals Club?” I thought to myself, ewwwwww!

You get the drift by now that propping feet up on a coffee table is a big no-no. Who wants to set food and drink, or a laptop for that matter which eventually ends up on your lap or desk, on a table smothered with germs?

It comes down to common sense, this public etiquette stuff. How we act at home can sometimes be different in public. If you like to rest your feet on your coffee table, all power to you. However, kindly refrain from doing so in public places. It grosses people out.

Conference Call Etiquette

July 26, 2011 By Tiffany Nielsen Leave a Comment

Conference Call Etiquette
Public or Private?

According to a new survey, 81 percent of respondents say it is somewhat/completely inappropriate to take a conference call on a cell phone while in public. I personally can vouch for this majority opinion!

Before there was Premier Etiquette, I worked in corporate America.  At one point in that previous career, I dialed into a conference call while sitting in a hotel lobby.  Big mistake!  As you can imagine, the background noise was streaming through my phone straight to the CEO’s landline and it was horribly loud.

The CEO, who I once thought was cool and collected, stopped the conference call comprised of 30 people to bark loud orders to the fool not on mute who muttered, “Duhhhh, Tiffany.”  Embarrassed –  and I think I even chuckled – my fingers found mute and I sat, not moving for fear of making another mess of a situation that could have been avoided if I had participated from the safety of a quiet hotel room.

Ah, the business we learn the hard way, speaking of which, make it easy to stand out-not stick out professionally and socially by joining my next public dining etiquette class:
